LET THE FILADELFIA LIVE AGAIN
A DREAM, THAT CAN BE DONE.

In the center of the city, but mainly in the heart of the inhabitants of Turin, there' s an old soccer field, known by old and young people as the "Filadelfia". In that rectangle of game, sorrounded by concrete tiers and a wooden and cast ironed austere stand, men take to the field, of who the names belong to the soccer history of Italy and of the world. On that green carpet Valentino Mazzola' s Grande Torino, tragically died in Superga in 1949, conquered five consecutive championships, translating into a legend a marvellous sport adventure.
From the moment in which the Filadelfia stadium has been deserted by the authorities besides by the sports, recreational and cultural manifestations to be set in the restructured buildings with a capacity of about 15.000 sit places all covered, a great attention will be payed to the tourist and cultural movements, linking the soccer activity of the first team with the attendance in the town of fans from the other sites of Italy, launching a "week-end" offer that will include visits to museums, pilgrimage to Superga, also projections of films in the growing Museum of Torino. For the summer are planned champions tournaments and exhibitions to give back to soccer its dignity and spectacularity; the Filadelfia Stadium can become the European soccer sitting-room.
During the year the structures, besides being used mainly by Torino Calcio, will be used also by other sports and recreative organizations, mainly the district's.
The starting of the construction is fixed within 1996 and the opening of the new sports facilities is already fixed for May, 4th of 1999 for the celebration of fiftieth anniversary of Superga' s crash.
It is a hard, difficult but non impossible undertaking. With the help of a number of friends of the old and glorious Filadelfia, I think it is a pursuible objective... a dream that can be done.

HOW THE PROJECT HAS BORN

Degrade and desertion

The studies for the realization of a stadium for Torino Calcio go back to the first '20ies; between '24 and '26, under the presidency of Marone Cinzano, was realized in that Turin area, at that timesuburban, the new sport building, immediately known by fans and Turin citizens as the "Filadelfia".
The original building included only two stands, the East and West; the initial capacity, of about 3000 places, was early insufficient and then the building was subsequently modified and extended.
In 1928 were constructed low box-office buildings, in 1932 was enlarged the stand tiers and in '45 the restructuration of war damages started.
Since 1963 on the field of Filadelfia were not more played championship matches; the field was not definitively deserted, but used for trainings and around it remained the supportery groups.
But was not more made any maintenance of structure or stands, that immediately damaged.
The '80ies brought the fast degrade of the building, now deserted to the damages of time and weather factors; the concrete was attacked by irresistible degrade process and, after the first stands and cornices breakdown, was declared in '90ies the complete non usability of the structure.

Sport, culture and aggregation

The newest interventions of sport buildings are conceived and realized as organic and functional wholes of more activities connected ed in mutual support.
For the moment the professional people entrusted of the project for the urbanistic and building riabilitation of the area of the Filadelfia stadium are doing a number of technical visits to the most important European sports buildings that show, for dimensions and placing, characteristics similar to those expected for the future building.
By a first round of investigations on the spot they found useful suggestions for the realization of sports facilities constituted by an integrated whole of functions in order that, around the "stadium", will be created every activity that will let the structure useable e liveable for every day of the week and in every hour.
In London, in Highbury district, there is the legendary stadium of the Arsenal; a building, of original construction before of Filadelfia, that ten years ago was completely restructured with the demolition and riconstruction of three of the four stands orders. In the building are presente the society offices, the club, the museum, the gadgets store, restaurants and pubs; a characteristic of the building is the absence of protection barriers between the fans and the game field.
In Montecarlo, in the middle of the town center, there is another example of building used every day: the "Louis II" stadium, in facts, ouside looks like a building whole for offices and trade activities, with a car concessionaire and a pertol pump; inside, besides the soccer field, there are offices, gyms, swimming pools, pizza shops, shops.
In Oslo there is another emblematic example with the "Ullevaal" stadium.
This stadium is the center of the district commercial life ; in the structure there a supermarket, shops, a pedestrian gallery for shopping, pubs and restaurants, besides offices of important societies, a postal officy and a bank.

Expected functions

The project for the riabilitation of Filadelfia area expects the realization of a building whole integrated, that can put up a number of functions in order to let the area liveable during all the week and all the day.
Near the stadium is then expected the realization of the musem of Torino, first example in Italy; the story of Torino is told with storical finds, shirts, photos, cups, a video-room with maxiscreen, pennants; of the Sport Library, point of contact where can be consulted besides texts, paper and sport magazines also audio-video media; the Workshop for the production of advertising material and gadgets, with a vendor shop for the fans; the Social Seat; the Club; the Foundation Seat.
The receptive structures, articulate in Universitary Residence, Hotel, Residence, take advantage of self-service, restaurant, join and seminar rooms; the spaces for commercial activity expect shops of sports articles, gadgets, specialistic video loan, bookshop, gym.
The tertiary activities settleable in the area are the counter, the assurance agency, the travel agency.
In the underground is expected a car park of more levels; an internal covered way, opened to public, will let the District and City use of the structures.

The project


The project, realized also by looking at qualified European experiences, is up to all the Filadelfia area, between Via Tunisi, Spano, Giordano Bruno and Filadelfia and expects a unitary organism integrated in a number of functions and realized in the respect of the architectures of the past.
The work projected by the engineers Roberto and Riccardo Renacco of Turin expects a structure of 15.000 covered sits in a whole of buildings integrated with the same, ready to receive the various functions.
The esecutive project will be articulated in various functional lots, everyone autonomous, to let an eventual opening of differentiate building sites in subsequent moments in order to provide better for the different needs of the various Organizations that will occupy the spaces.
Unitary matrix for all the project is the will of recuperate the Filadelfia area in order to give back it to the town as a join and aggregation place, to let it live every day, to give back to Soccer his dignity and to combine sports show with cultural and hobby moments.
